1. Scope
Sensory Visionaries provides services to adults aged 18 and over. Safeguarding means recognising and responding appropriately where there is a concern that an adult may be experiencing or at risk of abuse, neglect or serious harm.
2. Our approach
Listen and take concerns seriously. Avoid promising absolute confidentiality where information may need to be shared lawfully to protect someone. Record relevant facts proportionately. Consider immediate safety and whether emergency services are required. Use an appropriate safeguarding route where a concern meets the relevant threshold. Share only information that is necessary and lawful for the purpose.
3. Emergencies
Sensory Visionaries is not an emergency service. Where there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, the appropriate emergency service should be contacted.
4. Confidentiality and information sharing
Safeguarding information will be handled in accordance with applicable data protection law. Consent will be sought where appropriate, but information may sometimes be shared without consent where there is a lawful basis and sharing is necessary and proportionate.
5. Organisational customers
Where we provide consultancy or training to an organisation, that organisation remains responsible for its own safeguarding policies, referrals, staff supervision and statutory duties.
6. Recognising and responding to concerns
A safeguarding concern may arise from something a person tells us, something we observe during remote contact, information supplied by another person, or circumstances suggesting abuse, neglect, exploitation, coercion or serious risk. We will not investigate criminal allegations ourselves. Our role is to recognise concerns, record relevant facts, consider immediate safety and make or support an appropriate referral where required.
7. Consent, capacity and information sharing
Where appropriate, we will seek the person’s views and explain proposed information sharing. Consent is important but is not the only possible lawful basis for sharing information. There may be circumstances where information can or should be shared without consent, for example where there is a serious risk of harm, a legal obligation, concerns affecting another person, or another lawful safeguarding basis. Any sharing should be necessary, proportionate and limited to relevant information.
8. Adults and children
Our paid rehabilitation services are designed for adults aged 18 and over. However, safeguarding information may still concern a child, for example through a household member, family situation or information disclosed during contact. Concerns about adults and children will be considered under the relevant safeguarding framework and referred to the appropriate statutory service where necessary.
9. Emergency situations
Sensory Visionaries is not an emergency service. Where there appears to be an immediate danger to life or serious injury, emergency services should be contacted. Where a concern does not require an emergency response but appears to meet a safeguarding threshold, the appropriate local authority safeguarding route or other relevant agency may be considered.
10. Recording and confidentiality
Safeguarding records should distinguish fact, observation, allegation and professional judgement as far as reasonably possible. Records will be handled securely and access restricted according to need. We will not guarantee confidentiality where information may need to be shared to protect a person or meet a legal obligation.
11. Safer working and professional boundaries
We maintain professional boundaries in remote work and will not use a rehabilitation relationship to provide services outside our competence. Safeguarding considerations form part of decisions about referrals, communication, record keeping and when a service should pause or end.
12. Legal and practice framework
Our safeguarding approach takes account of relevant law and statutory guidance in England, including the Care Act 2014 safeguarding framework for adults and the Children Act framework where a child is involved. The precise statutory role remains with the relevant authority. Sensory Visionaries does not replace local authority safeguarding functions, the police, health services or emergency services.
